Colorado Habitat for Humanity Switching to Modular Housing

More Habitat for Humanity chapters are looking to modular construction to meet the rising need for housing. Some have even started building modular homes in their own factories.

Habitat Archuleta is in their second year of a 5-year program to build 15 homes in 5 years.

This year they are building three new homes for working families in Pagosa Springs, CO. In order to reduce build time and triple the average number of homes they build each year, they are building energy-efficient modular homes. The three homes are located in Chris Mountain Village II and Trails subdivisions.

The modular homes arrived ahead of schedule from the manufacturer in Albuquerque, NM. Fortunately, PLPOA board of directors generously agreed to allow Habitat to store the modules at their brush mulching facility on Sam Houston Avenue until the installation crane arrived, saving this non-profit several thousand dollars on storage and delivery.

Once delivered, the plan was to crane the two sections of each home onto their foundations in late June. However, as anyone involved in construction knows, plans “evolve.” The crane operator was traveling over Wolf Creek Pass from Leadville to their site when the transmission failed. The driver was safe, but the company had to track down parts from Germany to get it repaired and continue on to our build site.
