In an unprecedented move, the Navajo Nation has partnered with ZenniHome, awarding the sustainable housing company a $24 million grant from the American Rescue Plan Act to bolster affordable housing production. This collaboration aims to construct a new factory at the former Navajo Generating Station site, expanding ZenniHome’s capacity to address the Nation’s acute housing shortage and drive economic growth.
.
Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren envisions the factory becoming the world’s highest-producing housing facility, capable of manufacturing over 25 homes daily by the end of 2025. ZenniHome, which began operations in LeChee in 2023, has secured a 75-year lease at the site, solidifying its commitment to the region.
The initiative seeks to produce homes “on Navajo, by Navajo, for Navajo,” as part of a broader effort to fulfill the Nation’s goal of building 1,000 new homes. This need is underscored by a report indicating that nearly all existing Navajo housing requires significant renovations or complete replacement.
.
The new facility is not just a win for housing but also for local employment, with the creation of 500 direct and around 5,000 indirect jobs anticipated, a vital boost following the 2019 closure of the Navajo Generating Station.
ZenniHome CEO Bob Worsley stated, “This partnership will ensure that every family has access to quality, affordable, and lasting homes,” highlighting the strategic use of ARPA funds which were initially intended for site studies but were redirected to maximize impact.
This collaboration represents a significant stride in enhancing Navajo sovereignty, providing substantial economic benefits, job creation, and addressing the pressing need for affordable housing on the Navajo Nation.
