Making a Difference: Helping Your Employees Buy Their First Home

With the dream of homeownership seeming increasingly out of reach for many Americans, Cavco Industries, Inc. is pioneering a remarkable initiative that not only addresses the affordable housing crisis but also fosters a sense of community and shared prosperity among its employees. The innovative Homes for Our Own (HFOO) program is a testament to the company’s commitment to making a tangible difference in the lives of its workforce, offering a beacon of hope and a practical path to homeownership for those who might otherwise be sidelined in the current real estate market.

Launched less than a year ago, HFOO is a comprehensive, six-week, interactive workshop designed to demystify the home-buying process for Cavco employees. Covering critical topics such as budgeting, understanding mortgages, and navigating the complex landscape of real estate, the program equips participants with the knowledge and tools necessary to make informed decisions about homeownership. But HFOO goes beyond mere education; it embodies a unique, community-driven approach to financial assistance that underscores the value Cavco places on its employees’ well-being and aspirations.

The heart of HFOO’s financial model is its self-funded nature, relying on the generosity of Cavco employees who contribute to the program through automatic payroll deductions. These donations are then matched by the company up to an impressive $200,000 annually, creating a robust fund that underwrites the purchasing costs for HFOO graduates who qualify for financial assistance. This innovative approach not only facilitates the dream of homeownership for Cavco employees but also fosters a culture of mutual support and solidarity within the company.

The brainchild of Cavco CEO Bill Boor, HFOO was born out of a deep-seated desire to tackle the affordable housing crisis head-on, starting with the company’s own employees. “Homes for Our Own is a wonderful opportunity to put our commitment to address affordable housing into action and support our employees’ long-term success and prosperity,” Boor remarked, highlighting the program’s dual focus on social responsibility and employee welfare.

The impact of HFOO is already tangible, with impressive metrics that speak to its success. In just nine months, eighty-six employees have contributed to the fund, thirty-one have completed the curriculum, and two graduates have crossed the threshold into homeownership. These milestones are not just numbers; they represent real-life transformations and the fulfillment of long-held dreams.

One of the first HFOO graduates, a 23-year-old employee at Cavco’s Fleetwood Homes facility in Lafayette, Tennessee, shared their personal journey to homeownership, encapsulating the profound difference the program has made. “I’m the first person in my family to own a home. For so long, owning a home felt like an impossibility. Then HFOO came along and at the perfect time.” This sentiment was echoed by another graduate who, thanks to HFOO, was able to move his wife and four children into their new home in Hamlet, North Carolina, on Christmas Eve 2023, marking a truly life-changing milestone for the family.

Cavco’s HFOO program is a shining example of how corporations can play a pivotal role in addressing systemic issues like the affordable housing crisis, while simultaneously investing in the futures of their employees. Through its innovative approach to education, financial assistance, and community building, HFOO not only helps individuals achieve the dream of homeownership but also strengthens the fabric of the company, creating a model that other businesses would do well to emulate. As HFOO continues to grow and evolve, it stands as a beacon of hope, demonstrating the power of collective action and corporate responsibility in making the dream of homeownership a reality for more Americans.
